COD Terminology

Like many popular games, COD has spawned its own language, with abbreviations and acronyms serving as shorthand for seasoned players.

However, if you are new to the game, you might find all the talk of ADS, Hip Fire, and Spawn confusing.

With so many iterations of Call of Duty out there, we’d be here all day if we tried to explain every term. However, we have pulled together a quick guide to some of the general terms you are likely to hear when playing Call of Duty.

  • 2XP Token – Tokens earned by completing challenges in-game which double your XP
  • ADS – Aim Down Sights – pressing the aim button for greater accuracy
  • Flank – Taking a side path to confront an enemy
  • Hip Fire – The opposite of ADS, firing without aiming for speed over accuracy
  • Killstreak – A reward for a specified number of kills in one life in a multiplayer match
  • NVG – Night Vision Goggles
  • Operator – your character in the game
  • Perks – Passive ability or benefit for a weapon or operator
  • Spawn – Operator loads into the map (start of a round or after a death)
  • Stay Frosty – keep cool and calm and stay alert

Accepted Bets on COD

Firstly, not all of the classes and multiplayer COD games have made it into the esports scene.

Therefore, when looking for bets, you need to be aware of which COD games have markets. Then there are different types of bets you can place on Call of Duty.

Outright

Outright bets involve predicting the overall winner of a big tournament or just the match-winner in advance.

As with traditional sports, you can bet on the team you think will win the Call of Duty Championship months in advance of the competition taking place.

Handicap

Handicap bets are bets where one team is given a starting advantage. Handicaps are typically +1.5 or -1.5 so a team with a +1.5 handicap only needs to lose by one game, or win outright, in a best-of-five match.

Future

Occasionally, esports bookies may offer other future bets or specials, such as the next team to be eliminated, or whether a particular team will reach the final.

Live Bets

Here, you can bet on the winner of the next round, the success of a player, total kills etc just as you might bet on the next scorer or the next player to get a sent off in football, for example.

History Around COD

Call of Duty first appeared in 2003. Created by Infinity Ward and Activision, it was a new type of game, a first-person shooter game whereby the player controlled a soldier within a unit.

COD allowed players to choose to be an American, Soviet, or British soldier during World War II, and to see the War through their eyes.

Combining a fresh take on single-person games such as Doom and Quake, with challenging missions and a multiplayer engine, COD won numerous awards in its first year.

Features such as the ability to relive the last seconds of an ally’s life, being stunned by nearby explosions, and the ability to aim firearms were just some of the aspects which set COD apart.

The original release allowed players to either complete complicated solo missions, or battle it out against real human opponents anywhere in the world via its multiplayer mode.

If you chose to play solo your character was included in a unit of computer-controlled allies, to better portray real wartime missions. Both aspects have continued as the game has evolved.

As a resounding success, Call of Duty went on to spawn a franchise with multiple sequels and spin-offs.

2007’s Modern Warfare was the best-selling game of the year, and was followed up by the recording-breaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which grossed more than $550 million during its first five days of release two years later.

Then, in November 2010, sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops topped $360 on its first day of release!

The last game in the COD: Modern Warfare series, 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 broke world records with sales of $775 million in the first five days of its release.

Overall, the Call of Duty franchise has now grossed more than $15 billion since the release of its first instalment, with more than 300 million copies being sold. It is a global phenomenon which has made its way into popular references in TV and films, as well as in other war-related video games.
